Many apologies for not getting back with you sooner. Unfortunately, I must have missed the notification regarding this comment.

I’m not sure what you’re applying to, so it’s difficult to say for sure what your cost per acre would be. However, since I deal alot with hay farmers, I’ll assume for the time being that this is hay.

Depending upon your grass type and soil profile, you’d apply between 1 and 2 gallons of 4-3-3 per acre (often 1 is enough). So, for 50 acres, you’d need about 1 – 55 gallon drum. The company does not allow me to publicly post actual product prices on MY website, but, they don’t bar me from giving an estimated cost per gallon.

Purchasing 55 gallon drums, your price per gallon, including freight, works out to about $19. Purchasing multiple drums or 275 gallon totes can bring that price down to near or even below $15/gallon, including freight.

Hope that gives you some idea. Again, many apologies for not answering sooner.

Just a tip on weed control in vegetable gardens: Mulch! Mulch! Mulch! THICK Mulch! At least 3 to 6 inches deep. And while many will point out that using sawdust draws nitrogen from your soil, putting a 1 inch layer of it on top of a thick layer of composted horse or cow manure or some other well aged compost or leaf mold mulch… will stop just about any weed out there. Layering the sawdust on top of the compost mulch won’t draw the nitrogen from your plant’s roots. Yes, it’s a Great Idea to put down newspaper or cardboard first, under these layers! I’ve personally put down up to 10 layers of paper to really suppress tough weeds. AKA: ‘Kill Mulch’. Wet the cardboard or paper thoroughly after you put it down. To plant, just make furrows in the mulch or plant your transplants in ‘wells’… just push the mulch aside… and simply cut through the cardboard/paper with a razor knife where necessary to reveal/reach the soil level. The cardboard will break down by next season, and you can just put another set of cardboard-mulch-sawdust right over the top of your old ‘sandwich’, and plant. You’ll never have to dig your garden again! Your earthworms and fungi will love you… and work really hard for you, keeping it all tilled up 24/7. And using a good foliar feed and soil fertilizer, with fish emulsion and kelp, like Aggrand, will give you a healthy, super tasty, safe, ORGANIC garden!

Well this is the reason why Garlic goes so well with Tomato sauce. Make a water, vinegar, and garlic mixer to spay on your plant as well plant garlic in your garden. This will get rid of your problem. Bugs do not like the smell or taste of garlic at all.

First you can wash them with a moderately vigorous spray to knock down the mite population. This will help the plants by lessening their loss of vital juices. Prepare a spray with a teaspoon of real soap such as Dr. Bronner’s peppermint or eucalyptus liquid soap per gallon of water, or spray with Safer’s horticultural soap to help dislodge and suffocate the pests. Mites are found on the underside of the leaves and must be sprayed there. If the plants are small or easy to handle it might be easier to dip them in the soapy water. Spraying can remove most but not all the mites, and it doesn’t remove the eggs. if its bad there is a product called avid that will do the job,

What you are talking about is low nitrogen in the soil. Yes, some organic fertilizers are low in those nutrients but they are usually slow release too. That means they will not burn the plants. In addition, adding nitrogen can mean that your flowers will fall off or not bloom at all. You don’t want to add anything with nitrogen when your flowers are blooming.
Look for signs of disease as well. It might not be a fertilizer problem. Sometimes mildew or molds will also lighten leaves as well. I suggest worm casings (worm poop), some of the best organic fertilizer around.

If you are going to re sell them you probably need the certified seed potatoes….If not….I cut up the grocery store variety…and I don’t use pesticides…so they are organic…cept from the eye of the potatoe it starts with…but after that all the growth is organic.

I don’t know what led him to think that… Your plants will be better off with the organic! Like any fertilizer, don’t put too much on at first, a quarter to half what it says on the packet. Some plants like Daphne shrubs will drop dead at the slightest change, but oleanders and lemons are so tough that you probably couldn’t kill them if you hacked them to the ground, let alone switched fertilizer…Lol

The reason the books are telling you that you can only use certified seed is for the purpose of selling them on the market as organic potatoes. This goes even deeper as there has to be evidence to support that there has been no application of commercial fertilizer or pesticides on the soil for several years. Since you are growing them for your own use the organic slips and potatoes that you have will work fine. Buying potatoes from the grocery store that are not organic will result in non organic potatoes because of the chemical residues in the seed pieces.

Home grown compost is your best bet.
The organic fertilizers are not better for your plants in the sense of making them grow better, they are just better options for the environment because they are void of those harsh chems.

Using Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth, mix in spray bottle with some water, spray your plant, when the powder is dry on the plant when the mites come in contact with it, it cuts them and that is how the dehydrate. Your plant will be perfectly fine problem solved. Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is one of the worlds best kept secrets. I give it to my dog as well as my son and myself and have nothing but good things to say about it. I don’t know about Garlic water and Salt Water and plants just don’t go together. given the volume of research and scientific articles demonstrating the severe toxicity of roundup, it is hard to underestand how anyone could doubt this fact, It is simply in the literature, Only monsaanto claims it is nearly nontoxic, Monsanto has been repeatedly fined for false and misleading claims. It is deadly toxic.
I have 3 horses that unwittingly grazed on treated grass. One died the other two have damaged their livers and kidneys and have chronic inflammation in all 4 legs. They are now useless and will likely have to be euthanized. Wake up do the leg work read the literature, then give an opinion.

Hydroponics takes more time and lots more money than just Organic.

I suggest you use pots with a liberal mix of peat moss in the soil to hold the moisture in and keep the soil from drying out during the day. Make sure you get a pot big enough for good root development of the type of plant you want to grow.

If you are very good at making things, but it does take a lot of time, hydroponics isn’t too bad an idea. It also requires that you maintain the pH and add the proper amount of nutrients. In some ways it is easier. It optimizes the amount of water to the plant so they are much healthier and generally grow much faster. You don’t have to worry about always watering it because a timer does it as long as the tank is full. If you already have a large area of good soil than an organic garden is easier. If you have to start from scratch and make pots with soil and all, then a hydroponics is probably easier but that only assumes you know the basics. It takes a while to get up to speed. Here is one of the ebb and flow systems I made. They are pretty simple to set up.

I made one for outside use by using those 4 inch square pvc pipes at home depot.
It is something like this one but I only used two beams for my patio.

organic improves the earth…..the soil, the environment….thru the use of natural ingredients that become part of the natural earth cycles…decomposition for example, when they reach their end use. There is no toxic residual.

Hydroponic uses a lot of man made material that when finished must be trucked off to landfills at the minimum and hopefully not specific toxic waste disposal…….I’m thinking of some of the chemicals used.

Organic is with the earth. Hydroponic is in place of earth. If you had no access to soil then you’d be looking at hydroponic. If you have soil that hasn’t been chemically contaminated, you can improve it enough to grow organically.

Dont go hydroponic unless you have a lot of time to invest in it. It fails much easier than soil and is much less forgiving. Chances are you will be pulling your hair out at least once with hydroponics lol. Tried to grow some tomatoes in that aerogarden thing and I failed miserably lol. Now I just grow em in soil.

I will assume that you are probably going to build some Raised Planter Beds.

I have built some for my Roses and ran into the same issue.

I contacted my local Disposal Service who picks up our Yard Waste Material with the garbage. Turns out they recycle the yard waste into a very nice planting mix. Our local company Green Waste, operates a facility out at the landfill area where the yard waste is processed and made into the planting mix.

They were cheaper than many other sources including our local Big Box store, (Lowes, Home Cheapo, OSH or Ace). They also delivered it for me, I just needed to tell them how much and where to deliver.

Having said this, you might check in your area and give your local Waste Management Service a call. I was suprised to find out they were the cheapest.

I find your comments interesting in that you clearly didn’t read the article. The article clearly identifies the author of this information (not me) and also identifies the individual who compiled the information and the organization they work for (again, not me).

Moreover, if you actually did a little independent research of your own you’d find FAR MORE troubling information regarding Round-up and Monsanto than what you’ll find in this article. Instead of immediately dismissing this information, why not investigate it a bit further yourself to verify it’s integrity.

It’s great that you’re looking for additional corroboration from a large university, but, have you ever considered who is supplying a great deal of the funding or these agricultural programs – primarily chemical companies pushing their fertilizer and weed/pest control chemicals. Doesn’t exactly leave these Universities in an UNbiased position to report ANYTHING about these substances.

You’re more than welcome to continue to use Round-up. I don’t have the right to stop you (although your neighbors might). That being said, just because you like the convenience of the product, that doesn’t give you any credible position from which to refute or corroborate the information within this article.

I find it interesting that you quote an article about how dangerous ROUND UP is and you wrote the article. I find no facts in this article that would make me change my mind. Now If it came from TEXAS A&M, or a research center then I might buy it, but I can’t accept your own premise as fact. In fact I disagree with much of the article. I have nothing to do with Monsanto, Round up etc. But I get very upset when things are presented as facts and there are no facts to back them up. This is totally bogus research. Shame on all of you. There is enough out there that is really harmful, at least get your facts straight.

You’re making a good choice in getting into organic gardening!

Be aware that it is more work than conventional gardening, but its rewards are far higher!

Soil preparation is key in a healthy organic garden. If the soil isn’t healthy and alive, the garden will not grow to its full potential. Composting is a great way to beef up the nutrients and organic materials in your garden. If you haven’t already started a composter, start one this season so you have some next season when you are ready to start your garden again.

1) The plants never quit growing but you know the fruit is full grown when it has a light star shape on the bottom while still green or you see any color. When these things occur with a tomato fruit you know that the fruit is not going to grow any larger. But do not confuse fully grown for fully ripe. The fruit is ripe when it has turned red (or purple, orange, yellow, black or white). But there are different criteria for different crops (you might want to get a book on gardening produce)

2) Eat it if it is a tomato. Actually, you can most things you grow as soon as you pick it. Eggplant and potatoes need to be cooked first and things like squashes are much better cooked.

Depending on the plant and how bad your bud situation is, sometimes you can spray your plants with cooking oils which certain insects avoid. Also, there are all natural mint oils that some pests don’t like either. But it really depends on your situation and the kinds of pests.

i would go for the torch rather than salt which can bleed into other plants and stay in the soil. another good way to get rid of nasty plants is to pour boiling water over them. take out your electric kettle and an extention cord and fill it as many times as you need to from the hose. it will harm only the plants you want out and leaves no residue.

Contact your Master Gardeners on Ohau for some advise.

What are you planning to do after you kill the weeds? If you are planning to plant something else, I would not use salt. Torching would be better – just be very careful.

If you have used roundup already, then you would need to wait to replant. Just for information, there is a stronger roundup for ivy’s. Anything with ivy in the name is hard to get rid of. (But then you have to let the ground sit before replanting.)

It is best if you can just dig it out and dig it out again when it comes back. With enough persistance, you can get rid of it.

You could contact your local extension service. Where I’m from we have a local extension service where you can call in with any gardening/horticulture questions from how to get rid of certain pests, to what disease your plants might have. The local extention or horticulture specialist can answer any of your gardening questions I’m sure. You just have to google or look up the office in your area and it’s as simple as giving them a call. Just try to google, “your area” “extension service”, or “your area” “horticulture specialist”.

By the way, they will probably ask you what the bugs look like that you are trying to get rid of, which plants do you find them on and what do the plants look like that have been effected by bugs? If you post that info others on yahoo answers might be able to help further.

Depends on the plant, some vines as they lay on the ground put out sucker roots making it that much harder to kill. Do not use salt, salt has traditionally been used to make the soil unuseable for years.

I have heard that pure vinegar (the stronger strengths) can kill. I have used vinegar (canning strength 9% acid) to kill weeds on the edge of the sidewalk.

gasoline will do it in. Not very eco friendly, but deadly to plants and bugs.
Very close mowing will keep it under control and may kill it eventually.
do not use salt…will prevent nice plants from growing for quite a while.

Salt, gas, etc.. might work to kill the vine but these things will end up doing more harm than good to the rest of your garden. Gasoline is illegal to pour on the soil, you can be fined and told to remediate the soil which will cost thousands of dollars. But the remediation would likely dig up the vine, roots and all.

Torches are only good for annual weeds that are young and small, they do not deal with plants such as this gourd vine-way too big.

The best thing to do is hire some one with a strong back to dig up the vine’s roots or keep chopping it off at ground level and eventually it will die, though this will take several years to do (but it won’t be vining everywhere and will be essentially invisible if you keep hacking it back)

Well, my suggestion is to buy a few books, which is what I did. The Vegetable Gardner’s Bible and The Organic Gardener are both great references on growing and pesticides.

You should be more specific, because certain pests need certain pesticides. Some specifics that come to mind…

Garlic spray works well on melons, to keep away “vine boring moths”, which are way creepy. Actually this is good for lots of things.

If you grow tomatoes, I tend to put their leaves I prune in a blender with some water and use that as a spray, a lot of bugs don’t like it.

Also, setting out beer for slugs is a good uh… “natural” way to get rid of them.

And Beneficial Nematodes are great to put in your garden and soil for long term pesticide control.

Copper sulfate is just as effective at killing, but won’t damage the soil for quite as long. If you can find a supplier, it is a much cheaper solution.

Be aware that you need at least a few hours of dry weather after you put any kind of poison onto a plant for it to be effective. In Hawaii, that can be difficult to get.

Also, roundup comes in three kinds: One is for killing grasses, one is for killing broadleaf plants. One is supposed to kill everything. You might not have used the right kind.

Contact your Master Gardeners on Ohau for some advise.

What are you planning to do after you kill the weeds? If you are planning to plant something else, I would not use salt. Torching would be better – just be very careful.

It is best if you can just dig it out and dig it out again when it comes back. With enough persistance, you can get rid of it.

Fertilizer – it’s hard to give plants (especially vegetables) all they need using only organic materials. Composted horse manure is great if you can locate some (I found it free on Craig’s list). And a compost bin (or 3 is a must for a natural gardener. well fed healthy plants don’t suffer from insects like sickly plants do, and the pests that do show up can be picked off by hand most evenings (that’s when they come out). Snails and slugs can be held at bay by surrounding plants with crushed oyster shells by the way -works great!

tomatoes: at least a 12 or 14 inch pot with one plant to a pot. you could get away with smaller but as the plants get big and produce fruit it might be hard to keep them wet.
herbs: doesnt have to be a huge pot but give them room to grow a bit. you could probably put a couple in each pot in a pinch.
strawberries: can depend on the variety but a straberry jar can do the trick and looks a little nicer than a regular pot. (strawberry jar/pot are clay pots shaped kind of like a large vase and it has several holes all around the pot that you put the plants in to.)
i could probably go on for days, but what it all comes down to is giving each plant plenty of room. blueberries might be tough, not to grow in a pot but to grow them in a pot big enough to let the plant produce lots of berries. maybe it isnt an option, but what about doing a couple of raised beds. raised beds would give you more square feet to plant in without having a couple dozen pots spread out everywhere. ive even seen new landscape timbers that are made out of recycled plastics and can be used for a raised bed. just a thought.

Organic gardening is essentially growing great soil and creating a balance in you environment. Healthy soil leads to healthy and nutrient dense plants that are far less likely to be affected by insect pests and diseases. balance means that you have both good and bad bugs, fungi, bacteria, etc.. The idea being things in balance like insects means they will not get out of control and overwhelm your plants

Organic gardeners stay away from synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. That said they can use non synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. natural fertilisers include compost, animal manure, green manure, fish emulsion, kelp, rock powders and raw mined minerals. Pesticides (pest control) include soap sprays, garlic sprays, hot peppers sprays, companion planting, beneficial insects, milk, dormant oil, neem, etc..

Weeds are controlled by a combination of tilling, hoeing, mowing, and mulching.

Organic gardening is looking at your gardening environment holistically rather than linearly

Pest control!

We forget with the enhancement of technology how to live in a world without it. The same can be said for pest control. China has been doing it for years in the Rice Fields. It repulses most people in USA, although I have known some that had a septic system to run the lateral lines under the garden. Cow manure is used, don’t see much difference in human waste.

Dirk is speaking of Milorganite & similar . It’s refined , dried sewage , from Milwaukee (at least originally ) . Sewage treatment concentrates heavy metals, which can be toxic, in quantity.

It’s controversial, but it can be. (It isn’t commercially I’m sure). The waste has to be composted for longer than ordinary kitchen waste to be safe.

properly composted “humanure can be used in the garden” as has been for many years by us and the family . we have had the soil tested and found it NOT to have a high concentration of heavy metals .as we mainly eat local home grown organic produce .waterless sawdust toilets are not new . and properly used and maintained they are odorless and do not promote flies in the home.human waste is used in most asian countries but it is used untreated or composted and spread as “night soil” there is where the problems come from , as parasites cysts and diseases are harboured in fresh waste during the composting phase these are killed off the humanure compost pile can and usually reraches upward of 1100 F yes 1100F and that is enough to destroy all the nasties in the poop.

Not allowed in USDA certified organic.

Could be allowed in a private garden that is not certified organic but who’s grower considers organic but since they are not certified play by no regulations.

Night soil has been used all over the world for millenia.

All of the steps you listed will help restore the soil. If the car parts leaked petroleum products into the soil you may have to remove and replace the soil. I would probably double dig the area and try to reintroduce more microbes into the soil.

Absolutely not, organophosphates are banned by the UDSA NOP.

If you used this in a certified organic garden or farm it will be decertified and could not sell what it grows as organic for at least 3 years after stopping the use of the organophosphate persticide.

If you are not certified organic you cannot legally call your produce organic if you want to sell it (Unless it is under $5000 in gross sales but even still you have to follow the NOP regulations to a T and do all the paper work and record keeping). If it is for personal consumption you can do what ever you want and call it organic

Orientals have been using it for centurys..they call it nite fertilizer..but just don’t complain about the carrots tasting pithy
Some people want their food to be produced without use of chemicals.(Organic).What is more natural than cow or feedlot poop..That’s a big business all by itself..When you drive by a large feedlot in the country..some have thousands of cattle on feed..where do you think all that poop goes..it has to go back on the land, & thats Organic..

No. Human waste is too infectious to other human beings to be used in organic gardening. “Gray water,” such as water from washing clothing, can be used, but urine and feces are potential disease carriers.

Farmers and gardeners have been dealing with “what is the best fertilizer” for, literally, thousands of years. The link below is one list of the plant nutrient content of available fertilizers. The one constant in all of this is that plants need to absorb certain nutrients to grow and only absorb nutrients they need to grow as certain specific ions.
Nitrogen, for example, is a required nutrient for plant growth and is only absorbed as ammonium ion or nitrate ion. Organic fertilizers, including seaweed extract, contain nitrogen which is usually converted by soil organisms to nitrate or ammonium, which can then be used by a plant.
Because the nutrient requirements are known for most plants, you can calculate how much fertilizer is required for your plants and apply that fertilizer accordingly. Too much or too little fertilizer each has negative effects on plants, and possibly the environment, whether the fertilizer is organic or inorganic.
For example, if I fertilize the grass in my cow pasture with seaweed extract at .7% nitrogen, I would apply 8571 pounds of seaweed extract to 1 acre to obtain the necessary 60 lbs per acre of nitrogen. If I used poultry manure at 3% nitrogen I would need to apply 2000 lbs per acre. With those numbers in mind, you can see that there are other considerations you have to take into account.

organic gardening means growing in an organic medium like soil or coco fiber also using 100% organic fertilizer no chemical or synthetic fertilizers also growing outside under the sun but you can still grow organic indoors with horticulture lights such as HID lights(high intensity discharge) which falls under the two basic lights or light spectrum’s MH and HPS(metal halide and high pressure sodium) the MH light signifies the long days of summer with a white blueish light and the HPS signifies the short days of summer with a yellowish orange light….basically organic is growing without chemicals and pesticides

Use at least a 5 gal. container. Never forget to water, esp. when the plants get larger and suck up the moisture faster. As soon as the old canes are done fruiting cut them out so the new ones have plenty of light and air to increase their vigour and then yeild.

If you are encouraging them to your yard, they are not pests. Pests are things you DON’T want in your yard.
In organic gardening, chemical pesticides and fertilizers are not used.
Pesticides kill ALL insects, beneficials too, not just the ‘bad’ ones.

Composts are usually not complete soil food unless you are savvy as to how to make different composts. But compost is essential for feed the soil and healthy soil

Soil testing is a good thing to do to see where you are deficient or overly abundant in nutrients

There are excellent Organic pelleted fertilizers that contain no synthetics. Fertrell has good ones as does McGeary

I have had really good results with beneficial nematodes. these need to be applied to the soil spring and fall when it is cool and damp. these microscopic critters will in turn eat all the grubs in the areas where they are applied (they also control fleas, termites, some kinds of ants and numerous other pests).

Milky spore is great but it takes 3 to 5 years before you see results

The other thing you can do is dig up the area where you will plant the taters and pick out as many grubs as you can find for several days. This will help a great deal.

Oh and if you see mole runs in your garden you may want to leave them be as they are eating the grubs in your garden (and not your plants as moles are carnivores and do not eat much in the way of plant material)

One of the great things nematodes and milky spore will do in the end is get rid of almost all your Japanese beetles (which likely make up the majority of the grubs eating your potatoes).

If you fish, grubs make great bait.

It would depend on the type of insects. However, there are a number of natural ways to control a wide array of pests that are easy to apply.

If squirrels or other rodents are eating your plants, sprinkle them with cayenne pepper or spray the plants with a water and cayenne pepper solution. For small insects, spray the leaves of your plants with a mixture of 1 part dishwashing detergent to 10 parts water. It will not harm your plants; in fact, they will thank you for it! Garlic is also another repellent for many insects; you could spray a mixture containing garlic oil or have some garlic present in your garden.

Boil together two hot chillies and four cloves of garlic whole unpeeled in 2 cups water. Simmer 20 minutes.Cool. Strain then pour into a spray bottle. Add a few drops of liquid detergent (to help it stick to the plant) and off you go. It’ll kill most plants.

I have never looked into a product for this issue. Every time I hilled my potatoes I would find what I could for things feeding on the taters and throw them to the chickens. Now my chickens stand next to me in the garden while I hill potatoes! The one other thing I try to do is a crop rotation of epic proportions. I try to keep potatoes and other root crops rotating to the point where a root crop never ends up near a place it had been planted in the past three years. Its a tough rotation, but it helps. -The first thing you can do as you plant a garden is to include flowers and herbs that repel insects, such as marigolds, garlic, sage, thyme or rosemary.

-Try kaolin clay. Mix one quart of the clay with one tablespoon of liquid soap and two gallons of water. Spray your plants with this mixture. You can find kaolin clay at stores that sell organic products, or from suppliers of pottery clay. Note: While it is quite effective, this method does leave a thin film on your plants, which is fine for a vegetable garden. If the plants are for purely aesthetic appeal, try the next method.

-Mix dry granulated garlic into the soil around the plants. You can also spray them with a garlic product, available at garden centers that sell organic products.

It’s amazing. We did a garden one year with zero chemicals. We just plowed, planted the seeds in dirt, weeded/tilled and watered. You wouldn’t believe the difference in the way food tastes when it’s all natural. Luckily we live on a farm and have plenty of natural fertilizer! You know exactly where you food came from, when and what was put on it. I love having my own garden. Plus it’s cheaper! No fertilizer or pesticides to purchase and growing your own costs much less than buying in a store.

a couple of tablespoons of dish soap & water sprayed on plants should take care of aphids. if you have cabbage crumble egg shells around the base of the plants the cabbage worms can’t crawl accross the sharp jagged egg shells. mother earth magazine is a good source for organic , green info. and alternative energy

There is nothing that will be 100% effective, however you can get good results using DE which is Diatemaceous Earth (spelling is probably off), you can purchase this at any pool supply store, it is used primarily in swimming pool filters, it is 100% organic (ground up sea shells and fossils), sprinkle this liberally all over the garden, it can land on the plants and cause no harm. This will eliminate bugs with an ecto skeleton, for other bugs, use a bottle sprayer filled with water and 2 or 3 teaspoons of dawn dish detergent, and finally plant Marigolds around the border of your garden it is a bug repellant, and it also attracts Lady Bugs which will take care of any aphid problems. Do not spray the Lady Bugs with the soap, you want all of them you can get.

You have sustainable, chem free, ecological, etc., but not organic food-unless you are gardening according to the USDA NOP, including a farm map, 4+ year crop rotation plan, records of every input you have bought off farm. Records of everything you have applied to the crops or soil, etc., and making under $5000 gross income.

Otherwise you cannot legally use the term

I farm, for 8 years was certified organic. still farm the same way as when certified organic but can no longer use the “O” word in any marketing of my food. Only people who are certified organic or make under $5000 AND follow the regulations (which is difficult) can use the “O” word

But on to your question-are you selling direct? Wholesale? if selling direct are you selling in a urban area or university town or are you selling in a rural area. Location dictates a lot of what you can ask. I drive past a rural farmers market under 3 miles from my farm because there is one in a university town 30 miles farther away where I make 2x to 3x more money.

Just stay away from any pesticides or chemicals and realize any little blemishes and spots are no big deal. You can purchase ladybugs to keep out harmful bugs from your garden. Equal amounts of crushed garlich, onion and some chili pepper powder sitting overnight in water then straining out the water into a bottle makes a nice pest repellant for your plants as well!

Collect the rain in plastic barrels. Nothing to worry about. Many homes have plastic piping for their drinking water supply.Nothing on the roof will harm you. The rain has fallen through dirty sky before it gets to you.

I have noticed that with my garden when I water with the hose nothing seems to happen. Just get one dose of normal rain and the plants seem to grow dramatically. I guess that they don’t like the chlorine and fluoride in the drinking water.

Well, organic gardening starts with the soil. You may want to look into making your own compost. Otherwise, you can order large batches from nurseries in your area. If you have a yard waste facility in your town, you may even be able to get it for free from there. But making your own would be a better bet since yard waste can probably contain traces of fertilizers used in the original material, particularly grass clippings. Tree leaves would probably not be such an issue.

Compost is pretty rich and tends to offer much of the nutrients you plants will need, but you can always look into adding organic fertilizers such as bone meal, blood meal, bat and seabird guanos, fish emulsion, worm castings etc. You can even use compost tea as an organic fertilizer. You have to think of the soil as a living organism, so a healthy compost is based on colonies of microorganisms breaking down matter to make it more readily available to your plants to take up. Mushrooms and fungi can play a vital role in this process, so using products that contain mycorrhizal fungus can be beneficial. They say worms are a sign of a good healthy soil, and that is because there is a good supply of organic mater for them to eat. But really they imprve the soil quality by being there. As they take part in the process of breaking down, their waste (worm castings) fertilizes the soil. Mulching your garden is a great way to foster this type of network. I suppose the third aspect of organic gardening is pest control. As an alternative to chemical pesticides, you can use organic pest control such as neem oil or pyrethrum. But you can also look to the design of your garden to control pests. By planting one plant that may be prone to a given pest in the proximity of another plant that is known to repel it, you may be able to ward off these pests. You can also use predator insects such as predatory mites, lady bugs or praying mantises to control pest populations in your garden. Some sites sell larva for these. However, there are downsides to this type of control. You are essentially adding a foreign species, which can kill other beneficial insects as well. But going back to the idea of garden design, you can also improve yeilds naturally with the idea of companion plants. What I mean is you can situate plants such as tomatoes, peppers or watermelon that depend on pollination next to other plants that attract pollinating insects and hummingbirds. Examples of these are bee balm (monarda citriodora), catnip (nepeta cateria), anise hyssop (agastache foeniculum), klip dagga (leonotis nepetifolia) and hyssop (hyssopus officinalis). If you are interested in planting potatoes…

Potato needs about 100 days frost free growing
season. Potatoes are generally planted from the
end of March, or in April and early in May according
to your local climate conditions.

The potato will succeed in almost any properly
cultivated good drainage deep soil. Soil must be
moist all the time and weed free.

In March, first buy some seed potatoes from the
organic garden supplier. Most of them will come
in a 500g or 1kg paper bag.

Before you purchase any organic seed potatoes
from the store, you have to gather a few information.
Such as your favourite types of potatoes, the
growing space, the harvesting time, and the
volume.

Sprouting the seed potatoes in the dark
before planting them directly into the ground
will help to shorten the growing time.

For sprouting, prepare a 2 inches of good potting soil in a pot.
Place the seed potatoes on top and cover with one thin
layer of loose soil.

When under the suitable warm, the young growths will push
through the soil within a few days. A gentle watering may
be given. Earth-up when the shoots grow taller. Take
care that the young shoots will not be getting dry.
Feed more water when the sun is going stronger.

You can grow potatoes in any types of containers,
pots, barrels and large bags or growing them directly
in the open ground raised bed vegetable garden.

When the potato plants are tall enough, and you prefer to
plant them in the garden, you may remove the pot and
set the same ground together with the plant into the
garden soil. They need a sunny place.

Drill some holes with a depth of 3 to 4 inches,
fill in some rain water before you set the plant in place.
If you have more space, the holes should stand 2 feet apart.

Use hoe occasionally to keep the weeds down,
when shoots appeared on the soil surface. Mould up
the rows when the shoots are high enough.

If you prefer to plant not in the ground, you may place
12 inches of straw above.

If you are growing them in containers, you may place
them outdoor and fill up the container with a mix
of ordinary potting soil and rich organic soil.
Add some earth worms into the container.
Garden worms will help to generate the organic garden
fertilizer and enriched your soil.

When roots appeared on the soil surface,
earth up to cover all the tubes. Potatoes
will be turning green when they are
expose to sunlight.

Green potatoes cannot be eaten.

If you prefer to eat young potatoes, harvest them
when the flowers drop. If you prefer a bigger size ones,
harvest them when the plant is totally dying down.

Harvest the tubers carefully with the spading fork,
take care not to damage the fruits. Pull out the
plant and remove the fruits carefully from the
ground and remove any ground attached.
Place them in a cool dark room and
lay them on papers on the floor. They will
last long enough when they are not expose to
lights and moist

During harvest, If you discovered any diseased tubers,
throw it away, but not in the compost.

If the weather allows, you may leave the tubers in
the ground until needed.

Potatoes grow supper fast when they are planted with
the well drainage good soil, enough sunlight and rain falls.

You can also insert garlic cloves, onions sets,
shallot sets In between of the extra space, if
there is.

Well, far from self sufficient now. But organic gardening is fun. We started that idea from 40 over years ago. In those days, My dad would collect all the garbage and incinerate them and use the ashes as fertilizers. Our garbage bin is always empty. After harvesting all the beans, he would chop up the vines and bury them under the ground to keep it fertile for the next crop. We used to plant corn, long beans, kale, peanuts and sweet potatoes and cucumbers. Of course we have the problem of snails and catepillars. Organic was unheard of then. He just could not spend money on fertilizers. We had a big land area surrounding our house. All used water from the house flows into a pool and we use them to water the plants. Come to think about it, it is what people have been trying to advocate these days. Going green and organic and all that. Alas, Dad passed away at 1994 at age 85. Also, would be great to be still staying at that place. Keep it up, you are fortunate to have land like that.

Hi,

As you see in the other answers already posted, compost does protect the surface of the soil and so aids in keeping the plant roots cool. It also amends the soil, adding in nutrients as the compost is worked into the soil. This is especially helpful in heavy clay conditions since compost not only will add great nutrients, but also will lighten this type of soil and that helps in several ways–it adds little air pockets to the soil (always nice for roots) and allows for water drainage which is essential to protect your plants against root rot and all sorts of fungi diseases and other harm below the surface. So compost is helpful in a variety of ways.

Here’s a bit more on composting if you’d like to think about trying it yourself:

1) there are two types of composting: Active (or hot) and Passive (or cold). The active type makes compost lots faster, but is more labor intensive than passive composting.

2) Both use both green (such as grass clippings) and brown (such as fall leaves) as main ingredients, though most anything other than diseased plant matter is potential food for compost piles.

3) Here’s a bit about Carbon/Nitrogen ratios (which are the bottom-line for composting):

Everything organic has a ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C:N) in its tissues, ranging from 500:1 for sawdust, to 15:1 for table scraps. A C:N ratio of 30:1 is ideal for the activity of these microbes. Fresh grass clippings, with a C:N ratio of 20:1, have too much nitrogen. Brown tree leaves have too little: 40:1.

The proper ratio of grass to leaves may vary but should not exceed 1 part grass for 1 part leaves. Layering can be useful in arriving at these proportions, but a complete mixing of ingredients is preferable for the process. Other materials can also be used, such as weeds and garden wastes.

Generally, brown materials, such as fallen leaves and sawdust, are high in carbon, while green materials such as grass clippings and weeds are high in nitrogen.

If you save your fall leaves in bags or piles, they will provide an excellent source of carbon to mix with your grass clippings the following spring and summer.

Though the C:N ratio of 30:1 is ideal for a fast, hot mixture, a higher C:N ratio (i.e. 50:1) will be adequate for a slower one.

the greatest benefit to composted soil is ease of tilling . without organic matter some of those clays hard pan to the point of near impossible to plow and if you do succeed in plowing it you get hard rock-like chunks that never go away and the whole thing just packs right back again. compost blends with the clays keeping it from packing ,in a short time plowing is a dream. also water retention,bacteria action,access to worms,and soil that allows root penetration.
but remember ,compost is NOT soil ,it is an addition to soil,just as the clay can’t stand alone ,neither can be said for compost,they compliment each other,so not too much of either,and just till in well rotted compost,if too new it will rob the soil of nitrogen in the break down process,and some type fertilizer should be used ,a manure or 10-10-10- ,but sparingly ,not too much.

Some aspects of organic gardening are enjoyable while others are not. I’m not certain it is possible in the climate and zone I live in that it is totally possible to be completely self-sufficient. However, I do live in an area where there are other gardeners with whom I can trade with and who live on larger parcels of land on which they can grow what I cannot. And, now since there is a law where I live that requires all produce to have origin stickers, I can purchase produce that has been “locally” grown (in the state) and not from other countries. I am a big companion planter and immensely enjoy it.

If you’re asking about how organic gardening benefits you, first and foremost is that you are doing a mental and physical exercise at the very start of your activity. It will cost you less overhead expense. It’s also entertaining and rewarding. Healthy and worry free for personal consumption. And if you are planning to market it, it will be more attractive to the consumer/buyer because it’s a chemical-free produce. These are the only few answers to your question. I suggest you do some research on it.

i have gardened in compost only for 20 years. no dirt. every year i keep adding more from the grass and leaves in my yard, plus whatever else i have to put in there. i have had better gardens than ever, and never have to buy fertilizer. it has always worked great and i never had any kind of problems.

Becoming self-sufficient would be really hard, but we’re looking at a time when we can design our home to use gray water for the lawn and ornamentals, and rain water for our vegetables. Also looking at enough solar panels to have the power company pay us for adding power to the grid …

I’m not sure if you mean organic as in grow your own or as in completely natural?

Being “organic” as in to sell as completely organic you need to start with a plot that’s been chemical free for 7 years, and apply for certification.

Since you mention your family I will assume you mean you want to grow your own veggies?

The very best and easiest way to start is to dig up and work a piece of land.

If you don’t have a tiller you can work it by hand with a shovel and rake. Purchase black garden canvas (I like the heavy kind, it stays put all season) – this will keep most weeds out and keep a nice neat garden. Lay special black plastic canvas over the entire garden and pin down (some bricks or rocks to hold the plastic down will help too).

The best way for a new gardner is to use starter plants from a greenhouse. Tomatoes, zucchini, squash, peppers, melons, pumpkins, beans can all be purchased already started. Cut holes in canvas, dig hole and plant. Lettuce, onions and root veggies cannot grow properly with canvas and can be planted from seeds easily. Just make sure to pull weed often so they don’t choke the veggies.

Have fun! Start slow and figure out what YOU like to grow.

Deep hole 12″. Fresh bags of soil. Raised beds.
(4×4) or (4×8) pressure treated lumber. Peat Moss. Compost (decayed leaves). Plant marigolds with the veggies (will repel some bugs). Try for for 5.0 PH. Add lime or sulphur to raise or lower same. (call garden center for help, go to http://www.hgtv.com. Get generic hot sauce, about $1.00 for 12oz. Put in spray bottle and spray on the leaves. Add a bag or two of vermiculite when mixing the soil. Buy a PH meter or PH test kit.

Dig the hole, nail together the lumber, mix all
soil ingredients, fill hole, rake smooth, water well, let rest for a day, plant seeds or plants.

You can also make a top for the wood and screw in 2 hinges on either end. Use white pvc plastic pipe as an arch and cover with chicken wire- this will keep out squirrels and rabbits.
Rotate the plants each year.

I have been planning and researching for the last 5mths and am ready to get my organic garden started. We made a worm farm out of an old fridge about a year ago, so now we have a steady supply of worm juice and very rich soil to use. We live in Australia and the summer has just finished so will plant my seeds within the next two weeks. We will have to keep in contact and see how our gardens grow!! =)

The natural pest control is birds or predatory insects like lady bugs and praying mantis. Besides wild birds, chickens and ducks are good insect eaters. With the bird flu going around, though, you will have to get them vaccinated to protect your family. A pair of ducks will not only clean up the insects in your garden, but probably do your neighbor’s, too.

I do know that it’s important not to plant the exact same crop in the same place year after year. If you plant corn on the east side of the garden one year, put it on the west side the next year. This not only ensures that the soil has the nutrients that the corn needs, but also keeps the earwigs unhappy since they probably won’t like what you plant in place of the corn in the old place.

Organic farmers discovered a long time ago that rotating the crops keeps the soil richer AND keeps the pests down.

We have an organic garden at work and the basics are use plenty of home made compost and also, if you can get hold of some well rotted animal manure ,dig that in too. The secret of organic gardening is to provide a good soil and so the veg will be healthier. Healthier veg means that you are less prone to desease.
Also we ‘companion plant’ .This means planting for example, onions next to carrots. The smell of the onions deters carrot fly.
You will have to do a lot of hand weeding, but do this by hoeing when the weeds are small.

Build up your soil by adding composted organic material (manure, leaves, grass clippings, crushed eggshells, etc.).

The better your soil, the more healthy your plants will be, and they will withstand a few bugs. Don’t expect to wipe out every bug!

Use open-pollinated varieties of plants, which means that the seed can be saved from year to year and still be the same variety. If you save your own seed, you will have plenty of seed, and by planting extra seeds, you can afford to lose a few seedlings to cutworms, for example, and still have plenty for yourself. Even if there was such a thing as ‘organic cutworm dust’ I wouldn’t use it: I’d simply plant extra seed, and squash any cutworms I find while planting and cultivating. It’s an old-fashioned attitude for cutworm “control” and it’s frugal, too! And if you plant very early, there are more cutworms active. If you wait til the soil warms up, the cutworms go into a pupa stage.

I have been making my living growing produce organically for the past 14 years. For 8 years i was certified organic. I assume you don’t care to get certified, you just want to grow pure food.

It will take many years to get you soil in shape and learn the techniques for successful organic growing so don’t expect a great garden for a few years. Start small, no more than a 10′ x 10′ (3m x 3m) garden the first year or you will get overwhelmed in august when the weather is hot, the insects are out and the weeds are growing high.

Mulch everything with straw (not hay as hay tends to have a lot of weed seeds) and mulch well-at least 6″ thick. Straw mulch will keep weeds down, moisture in the soil and blight from happening on plants like tomatoes. It also adds organic matter to your soil.

Have a good hoe, rake, wheelbarrow, trowel and garden fork as your basic garden tools.

Start a compost pile ASAP, compost will be the main thing you will feed to the soil/plants. Compost is the best thing to build healthy soil and organics is all about building healthy soil as any organic grower worth their salt knows soil is alive and healthy soils means healthy pest free plants.

Mulch mulch mulch.. use shredded cedar, make insecticidal soaps and garlic sprays. Go out at night with a flashlight and pick off the bugs. Spread diatomaceous earth around. Slices the little buggers up and dries them out to death. Put paper collars around seedlings to keep cutworms away. Get Jerry Bakers book of Garden Secrets. He is the best.

Howdy from Coach Dave, I work for The Home Depot. Finding inventive answers is what I enjoy doing.
To make an organic garden you need a few things:

1st:You should to decide if you want to use pots or rectangular planter. Remember, drainage is important so the plants don’t mold. I like to put about 2 inches of rocks at the bottom of my pots.

3rd: I’ve contacted the Phoenix Home Depot and their stock of seedlings will be arriving late January. The ones that usually do the best in full Sun are:Tomatoes,Bell Peppers, Basil, Rosemary,Squash, and Zucchini. In the Spring you can grow Lettuce and Strawberries, but die off in Summer heat.

4th: To make your organic garden complete you should fertilize with an all natural fertilizers that are available at most local garden centers.

Yes, but you can make all the compost you need at home. If you don’t use pesticides on your lawn, you can compost your food scraps and grass cuttings to make all the fertilizer you need. It will be organic, and extremely environmentally friendly, but not certified.

A way to detect disease is by planting a quinoa plant in your vegetables. It is called an indicator and can tell you what’s going on in the midst of your garden. To see what insects are there, both beneficial and those that “bug” you, put out some insect traps and identify the bugs. This should be done each spring and summer to see the changes in insect life.

Compost tea is a great way for helping out plants in teh way of diesease and preventing insects from thinking they are yummy. It can be used foliarly and is not difficult to make.

All it takes is a container, good potting mix and good watering schedule to match what you are growing.
If you can provide shade, you can compost on a patio with vermiculture.
Several companies produce self watering containers under the names like earthbox or growbox…They come with instructions.
My suggestion, just visit a home supply store (Home Depot, Lowes), buy one pot – I would start with a green or terra cotta – in synthetic material. These pots are lighter in weight and retain moisture better than clay, which would probably be a help in your area. Some grocery stores carry rooted basil and thyme in the produce section. Plant water and start to enjoy.
In your climate, growing Mediterranean herbs would be easy: lavender, rosemary, and thyme are some herbs that do well in even poor soil and hot conditions.

Actually its better to use certified gardening products because those products are tested and tried several times before comes into the market. As there are many certified brands in the market, sold gardening products just that depends on you which brand is better or quality provider with warranty or guarantee services.

First if you want to control insects using beneficial insects do not use any pesticides as most organic pesticides are broad spectrum and injure/kill any insects they touch. Same with chemical insecticides. Even occasional use or “a little bit” will set back the ultimate goal of organic gardening years.

Beneficial insects need food so if there are not enough pest insects in your garden you will not attract the beneficials. Plants can lose over 70% of their leaves and still produce fruits and flowers just fine and the first couple of years of going organic your garden will be out of balance so you will have attacks by pest insects. I advise you live with it and give nature time to balance out things. If you interfere you will have to keep on using toxins to sorta kinda control the pets.

Healthy soil is the number 1 defense against pests and diseases. Healthy soils = healthy plants which are simply not all that attractive to pests and diseases. The best way to get healthy soil is to apply compost several times a year to your garden beds. Organic growers also grow green manure crops that are turned into the soil to add organic matter and nutrients.
