AMSOIL Synthetic Oil vs. Mobil 1

Ok, the numbers are in. Mobil 1 STILL falls far short of AMSOIL (even with their new Extended Performance product). In testing done August of 2005 versus 10 brand name petroleum and synthetic oils, AMSOIL came out the clear powerhouse, even over the new and "amaaaaazing" Mobil 1 Extended Performance AMSOIL synthetic oil. You can see the findings for yourself in a moment, but here are some highlights:

• Mobil 1 EP Evaporates 38% Faster Than AMSOIL
• Mobil 1 EP Allows 18% More Cold Start Friction
• Mobil 1 EP Allows 22% MORE Wear

In addition, on the TFOUT test, the "Thin Film Oxygen Uptake Test" (ASTM D-4742), which provides a very good correlation to the drain interval capability of an oil, AMSOIL passed the 500 minute cut-off mark with flying colors, while Mobil 1 EP fell short at only 469 minutes. Now, 469 minutes is significantly better than most of the competing oils, so you've got to give Mobil some credit. But, the AMSOIL product could easily have continued longer. However, since the test parameters limit the test run time to 500 minutes, we were cut short of reporting just exactly how far the AMSOIL synthetic oil could really go.

Either way, it's unimportant. AMSOIL offers far better protection against component wear, enhance cold temperature operation, less high temperature evaporation and longer guaranteed drain intervals. Moreover, at Preferred Customer pricing, you'll pay roughly the same price for AMSOIL (including shipping) than you'll pay for Mobil 1 EP in town at the auto parts chain store.

How Does Mobil Respond?

Guaranteed Drain Intervals?

Well, if you're using Mobil 1 EP, the answer is not as clear cut as you might think. If you're looking to use Mobil 1 EP for the full 15,000 mile/1 year "guaranteed" drain interval, you may want to take a look at the fine print. Mobil is explicitly clear that their Mobil 1 EP mileage guarantee ONLY covers vehicles that are outside of the vehicle manufacturer's warranty period. Otherwise, if you're still covered by your vehicle warranty, don't expect Mobil to have your back if you choose to extend oil drains with their oil. Not gonna happen. AMSOIL, on the other hand, offers a completely guaranteed 25,000 mile/1 year drain interval that covers you REGARDLESS of whether your vehicle is still under warranty or not. With AMSOIL, you're getting the highest quality oil AND a top-notch guarantee.

Which Will YOU Choose?

So, let's see ... same price, better protection, easier cold starts, less evaporation, longer drain intervals. Boy, that's a tough one ... I'll have to think about that for a little while. I think I'll take the Mobil 1 ----------------- not!!!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to bash Mobil 1. Many people use it and swear by it. It's a good product. But, it's also a commodity product. Only so much quality can be built into a product that has to sell "at your local auto part store" next to lesser priced synthetics - especially when so much money is also being funneled into big name NASCAR sponsorships and ad campaigns. Go with the best. Choose AMSOIL!

Why Wouldn't I Choose a Name Brand Oil Over AMSOIL?

First off, although there are a number of good oils on the market today, there are more than a few companies whose integrity should be looked upon as tainted at best. Specifically, when companies such as Valvoline and Quaker State (Quaker State is the manufacturer of Slick 50 Engine Treatment) utilize such deceptive advertising in regards to their oil additive products, how much weight can you put on advertisements for their motor oils?

Of course, using a brand that is well known and that you can get off the shelf brings with it a certain amount of familiarity and trust. These oils have been around for years. Our daddies and grand-daddies have used them for years. Why switch? If it aint broke don't fix it, right?

Well, I guess it all depends upon your outlook. For years people washed their dresses and pants in the creek on a wash board. Then, along comes the washing machine. Why switch? That wash board has been serving us all well for years. Your parents used it, your grandparents used it. It's been in the family for decades and has served you well. Is it really worth switching?

I say it is, and I also say that the comparison between AMSOIL and other oils is very much akin to the comparison between that washing machine and a wash board.
